The Shasta County Sheriff's Boating Safety Unit is located at
Bridge Bay Resort on the main dock above the store on
beautiful Lake Shasta. The unit is comprised of one full time
Sergeant, one full time Investigator, two full time Deputies, and
22 Seasonal Deputies. The California Department of Boating
and Waterways and local taxes fund the Boating Safety Unit.
The unit is responsible for boating safety enforcement on all
waterways within Shasta County.

New laws affecting Shasta Lake boaters and designed to
improve safety on California's waterways:

AB 2538-As of January 1, 2001, all children under 12 years of
age are required to wear a life jacket while underway in a vessel of 26 feet or less. (Existing law required children under 7 years of age to wear life jackets.) The new law also requires water skiers to wear life jackets, as well as all users of personal watercraft.

AB 2045-As of January 1, 2001, requires any person convicted
of a moving violation while operating a vessel complete a boating safety course.

County ordinance 12.24.090 and 12.24.100A Speed Zones - Shasta Lake

As of March 23, 1999 - No person shall operate a motorboat at
a speed in excess of five miles per hour within one hundred feet
from any shoreline or anchored vessel; no person shall operate
a motorboat at a speed in excess of five miles per hour five
hundred feet south to five hundred feet north of Antlers Resort,
Lakeshore Resort and Tsasdi's Resort boat dock, Lake Shasta.

Equipment Violations

• Properly fitting PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices-life jackets)
for each person on board.
• One Coast Guard approved throwable, cushion or life preserver
(ring) required on all vessels under 16' to have type I, II, III or V,
including canoes and kayaks
• Fire Extinguisher
• Navigation lights
• Backfire flame arrestor
• Ski flag
• Ventilation system.
• Sounding devices
• Muffling system

Speeding Violations

• Five mph area's
• Nighttime operation exceeding 15 mph
• Skiing in no ski area's
• Reckless and negligent boat operation
• Bow riding
• PWC's shall not be operated from one half hour after sunset till one half hour before sunrise

Underage Operators

• An operator must be sixteen years or older to operate a
motorboat of more than 15 hp. This includes the operation of
PWC's. Operators between the ages of 12 and 15 must be
supervised by an adult 18 years old or older.

Reckless and Negligent Operation

• Intoxicated operators with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more.
Alcohol is involved on 39% of all fatal boating accidents in the
state of California.

Citizen Volunteer Logo

The Boating Safety Office has expanded its resources to include the Citizen Volunteer Lake Patrol.

Mission Statement
The Citizen Volunteer Patrol (C.V.P.) personnel will strive to
enhance community safety and security through programs of
crime prevention and education with active involvement in these efforts.

The program is committed to providing qualified and trained
volunteers to augment field operations in an active role in serving the needs of the citizens of the various communities throughout Shasta County.

Patrol Objectives
• Provide a higher level of crime prevention programs to better
serve the citizens of Shasta County in a cost-effective manner
• Promote community awareness and acceptance of the Citizen Volunteer Patrol program as a viable and important prevention tool.
• The Citizen volunteer program will be monitored monthly as to
its effectiveness in the area of crime prevention and service to
the communities it serves.
• Provide high visibility "eyes & ears" patrol

What does it take to become a Citizen Volunteer Patrol member ?

After an oral interview, all potential members must complete an
application, which is submitted to the Shasta County Sheriff's
Office. The Sheriff's Office will conduct a background
investigation, which will include, but not limited to, fingerprinting, DMV and CII checks.

All applicants must be able to perform the duties as assigned.

All candidates must complete the 16-hour CVP academy.

All members must be at least 21 years of age and posses a
valid California driver's license.
