CRIME / INCIDENT: Threats at School
LOCATION: West Valley High School

On 5/6/06, School Resource Officer Mark Haslam met with School Principal Karl Stemmler regarding a possible threat at West Valley High School. Deputy Haslam and two other officers interviewed numerous students regarding a statement made by an individual who said that he/she would come to the school and shoot kids that he/she did not like. The interview was conducted in the classroom where the statement was made.

An extensive interview with the involved student was also conducted. Out of all the students that were interviewed, the threat was found not to be viable or credible. None of the students interviewed in the class where the statement was made could verify that any statement was made in a threatening manner. The investigation was closed at that time.

On Thursday evening several students and parents learned of the incident, and being concerned for the safety of their children, called SHASCOM as to whether or not they should send their students to school on Friday, 5/12/06. Again, Deputy Haslam responded, conducted further follow-up on the secondary information, and concluded that the information was being filtered through the school and had mushroomed into a secondary event. With the information learned on Thrusday night, the Investigations Division was notified and presented all the information.

The involved student was contacted and requested not to come to school on Friday, May 12th by school staff. Further discussion of the information was set for Friday morning with Investigation. That briefing was held at approximately 0800 hrs., and further follow-up, i.e. conducting a consensual search of the involved student's home, was planned.

At approximately 0830 hrs., television station KRCR received a telephone call from a male subject using the name of "Richard". He stated something to the effect of "You better get your cameras down to West Valley. There are three students with guns on their way to the school." KRCR called West Valley High School, advised Principal Karl Stemmler, and he initiated a school lockdown. Stemmler called law enforcement.

The Sheriff's Office, California Highway Patrol, and CHP's Helicopter H16 responded to the school. A preliminary search of the school was conducted and nothing was found. Principal Stemmler, school staff, and law enforcement discussed the information and investigation up to that point. It was concluded that with the cursory search, and information that we had, it indicated the call was a probable prank.

A consensual search of the involved student and an interview with the parents was conducted today. The parents and student were very cooperative and no indication of criminal behavior or threats was found.

West Valley High School staff should be commended for their initial response to the incident. They effectively aided law enforcement at a time of a potential crisis, and within hours of the incident, had the school back in session without a major disruption.

Due to the time of day the lighting, the Sheriff's Office left the area and returned on today's date with Evidence Technicians, Investigators and the Coroners Office. The area the remains were discovered was a drainage that flowed into the Clikpudi Creek Cove of Shasta Lake. It is near the Clikapudi Trail, a commonly used area however not near a common walking area in vegetation not easily seen. The remains were approximately 1/2 mile from the Jones Valley Road

The remains appeared to have been at the loation for several months. There is no obvious indication of foul play, however an examination by the coroner will need to take place prior to the determination of a cause of death. It is unknown if the remains are male or female and no identification was found. Clothing located near the remains consisted of a pair of denim shorts and light colored polo shirt.

This is the same area that was burned during the Jones Fire. Nothing indicated this death was related to the fire. Anyone with information or knowledge of the identity of the remains or circumstances surrounding this death is encouraged to call the Shasta County Sheriff's Office Investigations at (530) 245-6135.
